Today's Maker: Minh-Phuc Tran - Busting on the scene with NotionTweet
WHY HE'S FEATURED:
Went viral with his tweet about building NotionTweet in public
Launched first product on Product Hunt, Audience Feedback for Creators, 4 months ago, and already has over 2,600 followers on Twitter
Published 20 videos on YouTube
All while working full-time as a Senior Software Engineer at Torus Labs
I first came across Minh-Phuc's work when his tweet about building NotionTweet went viral (at least by my standards). He's got big ambitions to build 3 products this year and become an IndieMaker generating his own revenue. The coolest thing, he's done all of this building and tweeting while working a full-time job as an engineer.
Read on to learn about 3 habits that have changed his trajectory as a maker 👇
3 Habits that changed Minh-Phuc's trajectory:
📣 Publicly announce my goals and set a punishment - I force myself to be accountable by publicly announcing that I’m doing something, and if I miss it, I’ll be punished in some way. I did this 2 times, once was to write 100 articles in 100 days on Medium. If someone found out I missed a day, I’d have to take the person to a restaurant of their choice. I completed the challenge without missing a day. I did the same recently for YouTube, which helped me publish 20 videos in 20 weeks without missing a week. This didn’t help me to succeed in anyway but helped me get started in almost everything seems scary. And by just doing that, I got where I’m now.
🤑 Live cheaply and work remotely - I choose to live in an inexpensive country and build a career remotely in an expensive country. I live in Vietnam and work for US/Singapore companies with US/Singapore income. This may sound odd as a tip/habit for makers, but it essentially x5 my income and allow me to build long runway in a very short amount of time. I lived in Singapore once and I like the lifestyle in Vietnam a lot more, so there’s really no degraded lifestyle in a cheaper country at all, sometimes even better.
✌️ Prioritize habits and follow the 2-day rule - I have a list of habits, every 1-3 months I add one habit to the list. Everything on this list is #1 priority, above job, project, friends, customers, etc. Then, I have the 2-days rule - I’m allowed to miss once every 2 days. It’s even ok that I do once, skip the next day, and repeat this forever if I’m too lazy, but I’m not allowed to miss 2 days in a row. This leaves room for special occasions so that I don’t upset myself and/or others while also making sure I stay committed to my habits.
